This took two years to release? Why?

For a good time, check out the upper left corner of this shot where tree parts are just hanging out in thin air attached to nothing. PS5 screenshot taken by the author.

I don’t know what I expected.

I guess at some point I have to start taking the blame personally for getting hyped up about new Bethesda releases. Let’s take a little walk through recent history up to this point for some context.

Last year, in the midst of berating some of their most hardcore fans for not liking Starfield, Bethesda also released a brand new patch for Skyrim, the eternally re-released game. Rather than fix ancient bugs or the game’s on-going sound problems on PlayStation consoles, they instead rolled out brand new paid mod content, bringing new life back to an older controversy they had more or less already solved.

Before both of these disasters, in the bygone era that was 2022, Bethesda announced they were working on a “next gen” patch for Fallout 4. This was after most other big titles had already rolled out their free PS5/Xbox Series patches, but I was still interested to see what they’d do with the new hardware. The lack of any further announcements about it, combined with the ongoing delays and production mess of Starfield, led me to think that it was simply never coming out.

Clearly, the wild success of the Fallout TV show and the sudden need for new game content changed all of that. Now…
