In spite of all the development challenges and supply shortages brought on by the pandemic, it was still a surprising year for gaming headsets. New technologies appeared. Old favorites got upgrades. And some companies started taking their environmental impact much more seriously.

Here are my favorite headsets released this year that I’ve tested, ranked from least to most expensive. This isn’t a traditional internet numbered list because I think these all do great things and I’d rather talk about what those things are than try to split hairs ranking them. All five of the models below have earned a place in my small permanent collection, and are sitting within arms reach of me right now on a shelf.
