When you add gaming into the mix, the equation changes a little bit. I’m assuming you’ll want a mic? Do you have a good standalone mic already?

If not, the HyperX Cloud line of headsets is truly exceptional. The new Cloud Alpha is the best performer, and has a removable cable. But you really can’t go wrong with any of their models.

They all use memory foam padding for comfort and have sound signatures that are relatively neutral and suited to all sorts of material. In fact, the Cloud Revolver line has a sound signature that I’d say compares favorably to the MDR-1A, and it’s much cheaper usually.

Here’s the order I’d recommend them in: Cloud Alpha, Cloud Revolver/Cloud II(tied), Cloud Stinger.

Now, if you already have a good mic, then I think the 1A would do okay for gaming…but it’s definitely best suited to a relaxing musical listening environment. As ZeosPantera once famously put it, the 1A is like sitting in a bathtub made of leather jackets. I’ve never heard it described better or more accurately, hahaha.

Hope that helps you out! The Clouds get recommended all the time as the best all-in-one gaming headset/headphone because they really are great. And if you are still skeptical and want an alternative, the Logitech G433 is a great pair, too.
