Unfortunately, this particular Sony model hasn't been in production for a couple of years and it's only really around on the secondhand market. As such it's not something I really feel comfy talking about in a modern context.

I've never reviewed the 1000XM3, the newest version, but it has a number of changes to the sound and features. I slightly preferred the sound signature and design of this long-discontinued original model, in spite of its issues with the materials cracking.

The CAL is a great little headphone and the 1000X lineup is mostly targeted at those that want noise canceling. An "upgrade" from the CAL in my opinion would be something studio/critical listening-focused, like the DT770 or the AKG K371. The Sony models are more for commuters and those that want a wireless experience.
