Turtle Beach Finally Remembered Their Cool Huge Speakers

A forgotten tech development returns

Turtle Beach has long held a prominent spot in the console audio world, and they’re mostly known for making super affordable gear that appeals to younger players. But over the last ten years or so they’ve also dabbled in the high end, releasing more expensive premium headsets that pack in more cool things thanks to all their cash flow. They’ve been motivated by the same bullet point trend-chasing as everyone else in the market, most recently with the huge and expensive “Stealth Pro” headset…but that headset lacked the actual biggest audio tech advantage from their back catalog.

About three years ago, Turtle Beach split the difference between their high end and low end products with a new pair that also featured the best speakers they’d ever designed for a gaming headset. The Recon 500 has a boring name, and looks like it sits right in the middle of their other “Recon” headsets, but it’s actually a secret tech champion. Turtle Beach comes up with a goofy trademark for everything they make, but the 60mm “Eclipse” dual driver speakers inside this old headset are one of the coolest things I’ve seen any gaming headset maker ship.
