I love a good action RPG. It’s my favorite genre of video game. I like to fight things and then watch numbers and loot pop out of them, manage said loot, then go and engage in a vast story across a sweeping landscape. As video game genre lines blur further and further into each other, the original genre hybrid still stands out as a timeless collection of video game fun.

2024 has been a pretty amazing year for action RPG releases — and it’s only March. Here, in no particular order and without any sort of compensation or requests from the companies that made these games, are some of the highlights.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink

After years of troubled development and an entire change of studio, Granblue Fantasy: Relink somehow came out and is totally awesome. This was a great little surprise to kick off the year. It’s a shorter, more focused game than everything else on this list, but it has tons of fun across its runtime. It’s like a PS3 game but made to modern graphical standards.
