The original Dead Space is a super cool game. I wrote a whole piece about that right over here that you can check out when you finish this one — assuming you don’t think I’m too weird.

A few days ago, a newly remade version of Dead Space came out that’s exclusive to current PS5/Xbox consoles and PCs. It pushes EA’s Frostbite graphics tech firmly into the future, and it’s a wonderful blend of classic design decisions from the original and dozens of truly new moments and areas.

I’ve played about half of the new version on the PC, and a couple of levels on Xbox, and it’s already one of my favorite games of the generation so far. In fact, I can only think of one little tiny thing to complain about — and it’s so silly. It’s the goofiest thing to be bothered by, but it’s one of the weird things that I love about the original, and the new game doesn’t get it quite right.

Very tiny spoilers for a cosmetic nothing/easter egg in the new Dead Space follow, but this is so inconsequential it’s really not that big of a deal.

Both the remake and the 2008 original take place onboard the USG Ishimura, a huge mining spaceship with several unique decks to explore. The levels are largely dire and dark, with twisting corridors hiding horrors…
