The Coolest Forgotten Lego Game Is So Weird

The Lego gaming franchise is vast, and currently in development across a wide variety of companies and studios. However, it’s still probably most associated with Traveler’s Tales, or TT Games. They put out a comical number of titles over the years, with most of them being basic co-op action adventures where you hit stuff and solve simple puzzles throughout a linear level progression.

That run of content ended around 2018, and in 2022 TT Games rebooted their franchise with a brand new engine platform and a huge open world game in Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. It was a commercial and critical hit, and kind of homogenized the series to be more in line with typical games that sell in the current market.

Between that huge run of successful formulaic action games and the big open world Star Wars adventure, they released 2019’s The Lego Movie 2 Videogame. On the surface, this looks like it’ll be just another basic romp through some film-inspired levels, but it’s actually a weird blend of Minecraft and the late 90’s 3D platformers that came out in the wake of the success of Super Mario 64.
