Beyerdynamic has made and sold their gigantic DT150 headphones for over five decades, and in that time they’ve become a stalwart tool of the audio production industry. If you like to watch behind-the-scenes footage from your favorite films or TV shows, and they get to a part where there’s an orchestra scoring stage or voice booth — the odds are pretty good that you’ll see at least one of these big goofy boys show up, or perhaps its slightly older cousin the DT 100.

I think that’s due in part to the sometimes sluggish, stubborn nature of the production world — but also, the DT150’s are an exceptional studio headphone, looks aside. They’re rugged, their parts are easily replaceable, they scale well to all sorts of different equipment, and they have a beautiful time-tested sound signature.

If you can get over how they look, you’ll be richly rewarded by the rest of their performance. Beyerdynamic has made several great, arguably superior headphones in the many years hence, and if you visit the official page for these (where they’re often sold out) the company will even gently try to goad you into checking out one of their other options instead. Newer models have more modern aesthetics, less arcane cable systems, and frequency response…
