Sony launched the PS5 at the end of 2020, right at the weird intersection of mass audience interest and extreme production difficulty — both circumstances caused by the pandemic lockdowns and the shift to remote work.

As Microsoft floundered around and pushed back their one big launch game, Sony somehow came out of the gate strong. They released both Miles Morales and Demon’s Souls, two awesome titles that are still among the best-looking games you can play on the platform. The difference in launch software quality set the tone for the entire generation.

Amidst Sony’s robust launch offerings, third parties also had a go at the new hardware. Gearbox, known for their fun loot-filled adventures, took two different chances at the launch of the PS5. They upgraded Borderlands 3 with a patch that pushed performance to still-impressive levels, and they also published a title from a studio named Counterplay Games called Godfall.

I like Godfall. Many others did not, both in the critical community and the user base at large.

Godfall’s review stats on Metacritic, showing a 61 average score and a middling user score of 4.3.
The game released to a vast sea of “mixed” reviews, made more intense by strong competition. Screenshot captured from www.metacritic.com on May 15th, 2024.
