Sometimes things don’t work out the way we want them to. Personal expectations, hype, and video games often swirl together into a weird soup of disappointment thanks to the “magic” of long marketing lead times. You can anticipate a game for years only for it to turn out far different than what you wanted.
Here are the three games that most missed my own personal expectations for quality this year. Like the games featured on my top ten list, I bought everything here with my own money and I wasn’t asked to promote these games by their publishers. You might think it’s weird to make that sort of disclaimer on a “most disappointing” list, as why would publishers want to appear on that? Well, the cold truth is that marketing departments like all sorts of engagement — but I promise I’m not running some kind of weird paid negging campaign here.
I don’t think these games are completely horrible. They’re all much better than Gollum and Rise of Kong. But wow, they sure didn’t live up to what I hoped they would be.
