Sorry for the lengthy reply time, this got buried in my Medium notifications! I have tried SBX surround, and it's fine, but I prefer many of the more modern systems. I own a SoundBlaster X G5 but rarely turn on the surround mode.
I haven't had the chance to try Super X-Fi yet, though I've been tempted to buy a SoundBlaster X3 and check it out. I think its "take a picture of your ear to generate an HRTF" concept is interesting, and it's similar to how the new Immerse software that some companies are licensing works. I talked about that a little in this Audio-Technica review.
I love systems that offered both a "standard" setup and full user controllable options to adjust the surround field and HRTF. THX Spatial, Waves NX, and JBL Quantum offer this, and Atmos has it to a lesser extent. The ear photo idea is great in theory, but it doesn't offer that much user control.
