Sony’s Weird Abandoned PC Audio Gear

Premium innards and baffling design choices

I’ve reviewed and played around with audio gear made for both music and gaming for over a decade, as well as spending countless hours editing audio professionally. The general rule of thumb for buying headphones is to stick with an audio company regardless of your desired use case, rather than going with a gaming brand trying to break into a space they’re not familiar with. That rule has been rock solid for me for so many years, but one time it got broken so badly that it produced a profound outlier product that frustrated all of my carefully-crafted expectations.

That outlier is the Sony Inzone headset family.

Sony should be a slam dunk, easy bet for buying any sort of audio product, no matter the budget or the target listening scenario. They’re a giant tech conglomerate with lots of different and celebrated divisions, all running on top of years of experience in which they’ve frequently lead their fields. Unfortunately, they don’t always have the best internal communication between their design teams — and this can have drastically bad results. Individual business units like PlayStation or Sony Pictures might seem to have a clear operating agenda, but rarely do they cross over in any meaningful way.
