I’ll tell anyone who will listen to me that I think the mainstream gaming industry needs to diversify in order to stay healthy and grow. Project sizes, budgets, and development times have ballooned up to comical levels — and no one does that “better” than Sony, who has spent the last decade cultivating a gaming lineup built around prestige titles and cutting edge graphics.

Except for this year.

In 2024, Sony released a collection of small quirky titles — and one big budget disaster that might be the most failed, most embarrasing video game launch of all time.

That’s right, Concord represents Sony’s only attempt at a “true” AAA-level PlayStation game this year, and it sold so badly that it was quickly pulled from the market and its studio was shut down. The game was a $200 million plus dollar multiplayer shooter that was supposed to prove why their live service initiative was here to stay, but it never connected with fans even with its sleek visual package.

The rest of Sony’s releases this year look shockingly good in comparison, and the lineup almost feels like an intentional reset of their priorities — if you ignore Concord.

At the other end of the success spectrum is Sony’s surprise hit of the year…
