Oh No, I Bought A Switch 2

Was my skepticism warranted?

Earlier this year, when Nintendo started their big marketing push for today’s launch of the new Switch 2 console, I was rather disappointed. The whole thing seemed like it was built on the not-at-all-revolutionary concept of chatting with your friends while gaming, and talking over a video feed on a webcam. It felt both like a bad throwback to the early 2000’s, and also like a dramatic reaction to the upswing in sales that Nintendo saw during the pandemic lockdowns.

Surely, whatever you were doing gaming-wise in the summer of 2020 was what you wanted to do forever, right?

I was intensely uninterested in all of that, but I left myself a bit of an out. I always knew that my curiosity would eventually win me over to getting one, both because I’ve loved video games my whole life and because I cover them here on the internet. My default line was “I’ll buy one when I can walk into a store and just get it, without having to jump through any unreasonable hoops.” I didn’t realize just how early I’d get that chance.

This morning, I was just supposed to buy some groceries. I went into my local Fred Meyer (which you might know as Kroger) and as I was on my way to the frozen vegetables I happened to see a large sign in front of the electronics area saying that the Switch 2 was now…
