Nintendo Fixed the Goofiest Switch Accessory
And they probably owe a secret thanks to Sony for the idea
I’ve seen a cynical opinion out there that the Nintendo Switch is just an excuse to upsell you on dozens of accessories. It’s not just about buying the console, but also memory cards, and additional controllers, and unusual products like the Ring Fit game with its huge stretchy exercise wheel or the oft-forgotten Nintendo Labo cardboard toy kits.
While I guess that’s technically true, that same criticism could also apply generally to the entire market of video games, whether on console or a PC. Computers are made up of something like a dozen different unique components, all of which can be upgraded and swapped out over time. The other console makers also sell things like controllers and additional physical accessories. And of course, you’ve got to go and buy games somewhere.
There’s one Nintendo Switch add-on where I totally get and relate to the cynicism, and incredibly it somehow survived for the Switch 2 launch albeit in an upgraded form. You might think I’m talking about the omnipresent plastic wheels that you can use to play Mario Kart with motion controls, but no. I actually kind of understand those.
