I’ve been a fan of the long-running Lego game series, from developer TT Games, for years and years. And not even in an ironic way. I don’t care that they’re primarily made for kids and families; they are excellent comfort food games that are so much fun to play. The studio behind them has lots of talented folks working there, crafting a perfect blend of platforming, light puzzles, and general goofy fun over and over again.

The Lego games used to come out at a nightmare speed, thanks to a harsh development schedule and the continued re-use of a creaky old engine with new components smooshed in every few years. You could basically bet on multiple Lego games coming out each and every year, giving you a dose of that simple comfortable licensed franchise goodness at a regular clip.

Much like with Dynasty Warriors, fast development cycles with aggressive release schedules can’t hold forever. In 2019, The Lego Movie 2 video game was a welcome swerve that finally shook up the formula, ditching the older gameplay systems in favor of the mechanics from Lego Worlds. It went hard in a new direction with a renewed focus on exploration and crafting. I loved it.
