Almost two decades after its original 2005 launch, Resident Evil 4 is still probably the greatest horror game ever made. It has had such a dramatic legacy of influence across the whole industry. It inspired the entire modern third person shooter genre, fusing action and survival horror together in a way that dozens of new releases still chase after. It’s also a wonderful thing to revisit. It has seen countless re-releases over the last twenty years, both in versions preserving its original look, and a modernized state-of-the-art remake last year. So picking it up today is just as easy as it was two decades ago.
If you’re somehow new to this game, or just looking for the best way to replay it, how do you even pick which one to play? The remake is a pretty safe choice. It has incredible graphics alongside an entirely new design, rewritten story, and redone voice performances. It’s a ground-up brand new experience that easily stands next to other modern games while still managing to capture all the cool things about the original.
Playing through this new version last year was an awesome experience, and I hadn’t enjoyed the game this much since the Wii port way back in 2007. I even picked the remake as one of my favorite games…
