Sony currently sells two different high-end official PlayStation headsets, but neither one is perfectly suited to my own tastes.

I’d love to be able to invade their corporate management structure and fix this oh-so-important problem, but that’d take some kind of time machine and a whole different level of engineering ambition than I’ve ever had, so instead I’m just going to speculate on the internet for fun.

New iterations of these models that somehow combined the strengths of these two different products could be amazing, but that would require a level of internal cooperation that Sony is infamous for shunning.

For those that love the latest technologies, they’ve got the $150 Pulse Elite. It uses their newest proprietary PS Link dongle system, and has planar magnetic drivers thanks to their recent acquisition of Audeze. A modern power efficient motherboard and chip design both mean that it squeezes out a respectable amount of battery life in spite of the heavy power-draining planar drivers. The Pulse Elite is also burdened with one of the goofiest-looking industrial designs I’ve ever seen in a piece of audio gear, which makes getting a consistent fit on your head difficult without some fiddling at the start of each…
