Over the last few weeks, corporate-owned gaming has been showing its whole evil heart to the world, right out in the open.
Take Two shuttered some beloved indie teams and gutted their smaller Private Division label. Sony went to war with one of their biggest communities over the PC version of Helldivers 2, trying to force PSN accounts on everyone and limiting the game’s regional availability in the process. They only apologized when everyone screamed at them. Microsoft shuttered some of their best smaller studios, shifting focus to their latest toys in Call of Duty and Candy Crush, seemingly abandoning their previous strategy shift in favor of a newer, even more cynical approach.
Amidst all of that, a true Bungie classic quietly appeared on Steam completely out of nowhere and with zero fanfare. Before the glory days of Halo and Destiny, Bungie used to make weird games for the Mac. One of those games was Marathon, a first person shooter designed with heavy inspiration from Doom. The game and its sequels are more intricate and story-driven than id Software’s masterpieces, offering tons of weird lore buried in their depths that Bungie is still referring to even now.
