Kevin! Thank you for taking the time to check out my stuff and write such detailed comments, I really appreciate it! I’m sorry that Medium deleted some of your text. It can be a little fickle sometimes. They leapt out ahead of other blogging platforms dramatically when they first launched…and then kind of stagnated, feature-wise.
This is exactly the sort of discourse I was hoping for when I got into the online side of the headphone hobby. It’s fun to talk to someone who is willing to explore different things and ideas, and isn’t solely into “WHAT IS BEST” or hyping up the latest braided cable.
I could write reams of stuff about head-fi.
I generally like lurking there, but I never post.
It only gets weird when they start taking one of my reviews to task, which doesn’t happen that often. But when it does…it’s never the ones I expect them to be upset about, hahahaha. And I have a strange fascination with watching the ups and downs there.
The one superhyped pair that I felt they were the most right about was the Sony MDR-100AAP, and I’m surprised that Sony didn’t spend more time marketing that headphone. They were a good M50X alternative a few years ago when the community was desperate to get away from Audio-Technica’s newfound popularity.
I spend some time lurking in most of the major audio communities online each week, and I greatly lament that Tyll is no longer writing over at innerfidelity. Loved his voice and his detailed opinions and measurements.
I have a similar process to you for when I get a new pair of headphones. I have several go-to tracks to see if they’re going to fit my tastes or not, and yeah, as you guessed over on my other site, I like a very slightly smiley signature. I think it’s because I spend a lot of time in my “Real job” doing analytical listening, so I want something that’s just a touch more fun than that sort of equipment when it’s time to relax.
Of course, the true problem with headphones is that since audio is so subjective, I end up having a small collection with different uses for different moods.
Thanks so much for writing Kevin, I plan to also reply to your other comment when I can! I only reply to Medium comments on Fridays, which was something I instituted to help preserve my sanity in this more public space.
