I’m Lazy About Tags

And don’t even get me started on subtitles

Tags are really important to achieving success here on Medium. By success I mean views, and by tags, I mean those annoying little words you have to add when you’re done writing something.

Usually, when I get to the end of an article, I just want to hit the Publish button YES I DID IT boom on to the next. But no. That’s not good enough for the Internet.

Most of my work consists of stupidly-detailed headphone reviews that I kind of just write for myself, and that sometimes other people enjoy. And so when I get to the end of a long ramble, the last thing I want to do is try to encapsulate it into five categories.

I assume that this weird frustration is why Medium used to only allow three tags.

Sometimes I’ll forget to add the tags at all, yell a swear word, and go back and add them, because I know if I don’t…no one will show up.

The tags feature on Medium is actually pretty useful because it tells you how many stories are associated with each tag you select. That’s nice, because you can try to target a tag that has a lot of activity, or go for one that only has a few articles.

Hot tip: don’t pick the tags that don’t have a lot of articles. Like, ever. Always go with the popular ones.

Make sure that your story has at least three tags on it with more than two thousand other stories. Otherwise, you’re just asking for obscurity.

BE LIKE THE HIVE. THE HIVE KNOWS ALL.

I mean, sometimes we all need a little alone time.

But usually, Medium articles are meant to have an audience, right?

Oh no, I’m almost to the end of this post. Okay. Time to go find a royalty-free photo on Pexels to put at the top of the story.

A…a picture of a lady walking through a field of some kind? Yes that’s perfect. It has nothing to do with my story and it’s colorful, so it fits the online article formula to a tea.

Now I have to add the freaking tags.
