I have a soft spot in my heart for Spiders. Not the arachnids, but the game company. This plucky French development studio has been quietly cranking out some of the most interesting RPGs on the market since 2008. Each of their titles has been better than the last, and they all have their own unique flair that makes them quite unlike other more mainstream choices.

Their last game, 2019’s GreedFall, was amazing. It was both a critical and commercial success. I played it twice after writing a positive first impressions piece about it. The game finally had the budget and the execution to live up to the small team’s ambition. GreedFall feels like a lost Bioware game in the best possible way. It’s like playing through a Dragon Age spin-off game you never knew existed. It blended its own interesting mythology, faction-based story, and vibrant world with fun action combat. If you’re an RPG fan, it’s a must play.

GreedFall felt like the culmination of everything Spiders had learned during a decade of low budget RPG development. So when their next game Steelrising was first announced, I was excited.
