I’m not the best or most dedicated Dragon Age fan in the world, in spite of counting the series among my favorite video games.

Bioware’s long-dormant fantasy RPG franchise is set in a world called “Thedas,” a sweeping fantasy land full of different biomes and characters. Most serious fans probably know that the name for the world came about in an extremely goofy way. It’s actually a shrunk down version of the phrase “The Dragon Age setting,” a temporary development name that stayed in the game when they couldn’t think of anything else.

Isn’t that wild? I’m ashamed to admit that I didn’t learn this for the first time until earlier this year. I was simultaneously delighted at how ridiculous it was — and horrified that I didn’t know this amazing fact much sooner. Don’t worry, I’ll turn in my Bioware Fan Card at the door on my way out.

With my embarrassing admission out of the way, I’m still eagerly awaiting the next chapter in this fantasy saga. Back in the summer months, just as Star Wars Outlaws was about to launch, I took some time to ponder which big budget game releases I was still looking forward to the most this year. I know that there’s always room for something unexpected or indie to come…
