The HyperX Pulsefire Surge uses a nice PixArt 3389 sensor and Omron mouse buttons rated for 50 million clicks, and it costs less than several other mice using similar parts. I’ve put those specs right at the top of this review because HyperX (unlike most other peripheral companies) puts them right on the box.

It’s refreshing to pick up a mouse box and know exactly what I’m getting. So many companies are engaged in a “marketing-off” with each other in the gaming mouse space. It’s all about making big claims, inventing cool sci-fi names for the off-the-shelf PixArt sensor they bought, and chasing the lightest weight possible.

The Pulsefire Surge doesn’t do any of that. It’s just a nice, wired gaming mouse with a reasonable price and some bright lighting strapped around it. It shares an increasingly tiny space with other such products like the SteelSeries Rival 5. It’s a mouse for those that want solid performance without the hype — and some really bright lights.

You might think that hype is harmless. But consumers always end up paying for it. The costs of those grand marketing campaigns and slick CG trailers always get passed along.
