In spite of some opinions and appearances to the contrary, I’ve never outright disliked the Cloud MIX as a product.

Far from it.

Rather, I was mostly reacting to how big a shift it was away from the rest of HyperX’s product lineup, both in feature set and intended audience.

Last year’s initial version had a small identity crisis, in my opinion.

It launched with a style-headphone-esque premium price and marketing campaign, but it came in a standard muted black color scheme that eschewed even HyperX’s trademark bright red flair, and that incongruity surprised me.

As of today, the Cloud MIX has at last planted its flag firmly in style headphone territory, or as HyperX calls it, the “Lifestyle headphone” market.

That’s a smart marketing distinction to make.

UPDATE: I’ve reviewed these, if you’re interested!

The Cloud MIX has always been a solid all-in-one sort of product, offering a small portable frame, Bluetooth 4.2 wireless and wired hi-res-certified connectivity, incredibly soft ear pads, and a respectable 20-hour battery.

None of that changes in this new version, but the entire visual aesthetic has been revamped in what I think is one of HyperX’s best-looking colorways so far.

I usually end up getting the default black version of something…but if offered a choice, I will always take a fun color if there’s one that appeals to me.

HyperX has a history of crafting new colors for their headsets, all the way back to the first Cloud, and it’s great to see the MIX participate in that tradition.

If you’re a gamer, chances are you use a variety of devices that both have and don’t have headphone jacks on a daily basis, so there’s an undeniable appeal to a competent gaming headset that also doubles as a Bluetooth pair.

Look, I know that a new color of something isn’t a revolutionary paradigm shift, but this was already a nice headset clearly aimed at the style-conscious listener, and so a new color option is the next logical step.

HyperX has already launched two solid new products at the tail end of this year in the Cloud Orbit and Cloud Alpha S, but this new colorway for the MIX is easily the most visually eye-catching of their recent launches.

I was surprised at how relatively-subdued the Orbit’s final color scheme was in this era of customizable RGB lights and bold color choices, so I’m glad to see HyperX hasn’t forgotten the simple pleasure of a fun color option.

It’s also great that, unlike Corsair has done in the past, they aren’t charging any arbitrary price premium for this new color.

You can buy the new Rose Gold Cloud MIX starting today through their standard distribution partners, and I’ll be revisiting this model soon to see how my perceptions have changed (or not) in the year since launch.
