Horizon: Zero Dawn Doesn’t Need Another Re-Release

The Horizon series is the closest thing that Sony has to their own Bioware game, or to The Elder Scrolls — even though they don’t always market it that way. Sony wants you to think that Horizon is just like their other “prestige” single player games, with a breathtaking story and majestic vistas — and it is, it’s just also filled with all sorts of open world RPG goodness.

If Horizon: Forbidden West hadn’t launched within the same timeframe as Elden Ring, it would easily be my favorite RPG of the year, and it’s also one of the best “next generation” games so far whether you play it on a PS4 or a PS5. Its graphics are truly cutting edge, with huge sweeping vistas, a massive world to explore, and characters that are shockingly lifelike whether they’re minor NPCs or major quest givers.

Most of the same superlatives can be said about 2017’s Horizon: Zero Dawn. Though the character animations haven’t quite held up the way that Sony probably hoped they would, and the world and combat encounters seem a little scaled back compared to the newer installment, it’s still one of the best-looking games ever made.
