2022 has plenty of “safe” choices for Best Game of the Year. You’ve got the breakout hit that is Elden Ring, standout entries in stalwart franchises like God of War: Ragnarök, and of course the unstoppable onslaught that is Modern Warfare 2, which seemingly revived the Call of Duty brand overnight.

However, this year also had plenty of good weird games in it. I’ve enjoyed a ton of games this year that won’t show up on most publications’ or YouTube Channels’ GOTY lists, but which I’ll happily revisit and complete every last morsel of content in. I’m going to highlight all of these games in a spoiler-free fashion over the next several weeks — starting with Ghostwire: Tokyo.

Unfortunately for this excellent open world action game, it came out in March. At that time, most of the mainstream gaming world was still playing Elden Ring, or maybe even Horizon: Forbidden West. It also didn’t help its exposure that Ghostwire: Tokyo requires either a capable PC or a PS5 to play. While its Unreal Engine innards mean that it can potentially scale to lesser GPUs, it’s actually one of the few current games that I think demands to be experienced with ray tracing turned on.\
