Gaming Has Reached Peak Samurai

Tomorrow morning, Sony will begin to roll out the PC launch of their seminal 2020 open world action hit Ghost of Tsushima. The title brought a level of polish and prestige to the samurai video game not often seen or tried before, and it’s great that PC players will have the chance to access it…even if it’s also embroiled in the ongoing PlayStation Network Account controversy that started with Helldivers 2.

Sony seems to have learned some lessons from that whole mess, and I hope that their samurai launch is successful. But if not…perhaps you could check out Sony’s other high profile PS5 samurai game Rise of the Ronin. This blend of hardcore Soulslike action, modern open world tropes, and Koei Tecmo-produced silliness remains my favorite big budget game of the year so far. It’s a beautiful and mechanically dense game with a thoughtful and melodramatic story. Its deep character creation system means you get to not only project yourself into the game world, but create your own sworn sibling (and possible nemesis) as well.

Don’t have access to a PS5 or a desire to support Sony, but still think a Koei Tecmo samurai romp might be exactly your sort of thing?
