Just a logo shown so far

After years of teases, a failed MMO that never launched worldwide, and a video a few days ago that almost read like an insult to the fanbase — Capcom has finally announced Dragon’s Dogma 2.

It almost seemed like they weren’t going to. Today’s subdued video contains about twelve minutes of three development team members from the original title reminiscing about the game’s creation, followed by a very brief reveal of some t-shirts featuring a logo for the sequel. This follow-up news post on the Capcom blog reveals that the game will run on the company’s RE Engine…and that’s it so far.

I’m glad that this game is finally an official project after what feels like years of tantalizing breadcrumbs. However, I personally loathe this sort of announcement. I hate that it’s just a logo. That means nothing to me, and it gives nothing away that I can be happy about. The game could be well into development and not quite ready to show, or it could be that the T-shirts worn in the video are the only thing they have finished so far.

The video game industry loves the just-a-logo announcement trick. They do it all the time, because people keep falling for it. It’s the bare minimum needed to hype up a fanbase and get them going on creating vlogs, fan art, and other free marketing content.
