Apple Fixed the Problem that broke USB audio devices in Mac OS!

The SoundBlaster E1 lives again!

A couple of months ago I wrote about how Apple had broken support for my portable DAC/Amp in a new OS update.

Fortunately, Henk Oosterveld noticed that a recent update fixed the problem and left a reply on my original story. I promised to test it out when I could, and now here we are!

My E1 is once again humming along perfectly and putting out crisp 24-bit 44khz audio to my 250 Ohm Beyerdynamic DT770 Pros. I had forgotten that it was limited to 44khz audio, and I had forgotten that it had such a sensitive volume slider.

It’s just different enough to the Schiit Fulla I bought on closeout to replace it that I’ve decided to write a DAC showdown between the two, because why not?

In the meantime, I can confirm that this fix worked.

Now, if only I could bring myself to be as excited about the WWDC news as I am about being able to use this DAC again. I know I know, as a 12-inch MacBook and iPhone 6 Plus user, I’m probably not Apple’s target “Spend all the money every year” demographic. But I still like the company’s stuff, and I still at least try to get excited about everything.

I would also still like to buy some AirPods without waiting six weeks to get them. Surely that day is coming soon, right?
